Diamond legal cards: Experienced

Features in: Secrets of the Phoenix page 73, Dark Oracle of Fire, Broken Wishes, and several older stories from before he became a Master.
The younger brother of former Champion Shiba Tsukune, and hence uncle to Shiba Aikune, Shiba Ningen comes from a powerful family. Even ignoring his relations, however, he has still achieved much - he is the first member of the Shiba family ever to sit on the Council of Masters, and one of the very few Ishiken to ever have come out of the Shiba.

As usual for a Master of the Void, Ningen spends much of his time in meditation and often seems unwilling to take action. The truth is likely to be deeper than that: he does not wish to act unless action is truly necessary. So for instance, he knows that the Voice of the Masters, Shiba Yoma, is a Kolat. But he also knows that Yoma is more loyal to the Phoenix than the Kolat, and so doesn't act. All well and good, unless he's ever wrong...

Reaction: Once per turn, when you draw a card, discard it to draw another card.

First given to us at the beginning of the Gold arc, Shiba Ningen has been a staple in Phoenix decks since. His stats are impressive - 3/4 for 7G with 3ph, and a Shugenja to boot - and on top of that he has a very useful ability. Although he's not allowing you to draw two cards at once, that is generally the effect - because in any game there are almost certainly cards in your deck you don't want to see, and others you'd really like to draw. Ningen lets you get to the ones you need faster: when using him, don't be afraid to chuck marginally useful cards when you know that most of your deck is full of better ones!

Ningen's only drawback, as with many other Phoenix personalities, is his honour requirement. Of all the Clans, it seems that the Phoenix are most spoilt for choice when it comes to solid personalities with an honour requirement of 8 or more. Still, the only good reason to leave Ningen out of an honour or switch deck is not owning him: military decks are tougher, and depend on what other personalities you're running, but his stats do make him worth considering.
