The only things we can say for certain about Genjo are that he's an Asako, male, and a scribe. But with no fiction appearances and no flavour text, we really know very little about him! His card, however, is very flexible - and one of the few Phoenix usable in low-honour decks.

Asako Genjo

1F, 4C
6HR, 8GC, 2PH
Phoenix Clan Air Shugenja*Scribe
When bringing Genjo into play you may waive his Honor Requirement and permanently give him -2C.
Reaction: After one of your spells is destroyed, bow Genjo to return it to your hand from your discard pile. Keep that spell face-up and revealed. The next time this game it goes to your discard pile, remove it from the game instead.

Who wouldn't want to be able to use every copy of Walking the Way in their deck twice? That was my first thought on seeing Asako Genjo. There are several powerful spells that destroy themselves when cast - Force of Will and the Fires that Cleanse spring to mind alongside Walk - and Genjo allows you to use them extra times. The cost for doing so - bowing Genjo - is one that will be borne better by some decks than others. In general, military decks won't be able to afford to bow him. Honour decks wouldn't mind- but they would mind paying 8G for a 2ph personality, and then spending lots of gold on spells! Genjo's natural home would seem to be a control-type deck, that relies on getting combinations of cards into their hand and which can get use out of both Walking the Way and Force of Will.

This is where Genjo's chi loss trait comes into play. Many control decks run cards that lose them honour, like Ambush, Kolat Assassin, Written in Blood and so on. Genjo's ability to come out even when you're low on honour is really useful for those decks, which are otherwise short on Phoenix willing to join them! As such, Genjo is an honourary member of the Evil Asako Society (why is it that every Phoenix bloodspeaker card in an Asako? I thought the Isawa were better known for messing with things Man Was Not Meant To Know?).

Genjo should be considered for any spell-heavy deck, if only for the ability to rescue important spells when the person the spell is attached to gets killed. Off Kyuden Agasha, you might get a battle spell destroyed and bow Genjo to take it back into your hand - then attach it and cast it in the same battle. This could get very annoying for your opponent!
