Birth and Death

This particular is going to cover an event, Birth and Death. This event is a rare from Reign of Blood. When it appears, you must target a personality in play. If the personality does not have the Shugenja trait, they gain +1 chi and the Shugenja trait. If, however, the personality is already a shugenja, all kihos and spells cost them 2 additional gold for the rest of the game.

Why would you want to use an event like this? First, all clans in Diamond got at least 3 first turn personalities. Phoenix, for a Shugenja and spell heavy clan, got 2 of theirs as Samurai, instead of Shugenja. For a deck using the most efficient use of our resources, we must include those non-spellcasters. Thus, most of our shugenja require at least 2, if not 3, holdings to purchase. This slows down the playability factor, or makes us use fewer spells and kihos, an odd thing for the clan most involved with magic.

Birth and Death allows you to speed up the use of spells and kihos that much faster. Target one of your Boxable Samurai [Tsukimi and Danjuro], and suddenly you have an unexpected Shugenja in play. In Morning Glory Castle, this gives you one more personality who can destroy themselves for Mirabu's ability. Also, with Danjuro, it has recently been clarified that he can not jump in the way of actions that only affect Shugenja, as he is not one. This event will make him one. Thus, he becomes even more nasty.

Another use of this event is to chump an opposing Shugenja. If they have a Shugenja out, and you don't have a better use for this Event, you can hurt that Shugenja badly. In Open this will nerf Isawa Kaede Exp. and Naka Kuro Exp. Unfortunately, it does not hurt Togashi Satsu Exp. at all, as he is not a Shugenja, but a Monk. In fact, it would give him +1C. In fact, Dragon would probably like this event as much as Phoenix, if not more.

Now, as always with events, this is a random timing card. There is no way to predict it, or at least very little. If the event shows up after you use Shogun's Barracks or Agasha Seruma, you can choose to let it sit and come off next turn, or discard it. Otherwise, it is totally random, like all events. However, this one has two effects, which means it is much lower likelihood of hurting you. There is the minor chance that it can hurt you, if you only have one shugenja in play, and your opponent doesn't have any personalities. Even if your opponent has a non-Shugenja in play, this event is unlikely to help them, as there are few clans which gain from a personality gaining the Shugenja trait suddenly. True, it is possible to boost a Dragon, Unicorn [out of Shinden Horiuchi], or other Phoenix player, but others are most likely only going to be gaining +1C, a minimal bonus.

Consider this card when you next make a mixed Samurai/Shugenja deck!
