Comments:

I love this deck, because it encompasses so many of my favourite aspects of the Phoenix Clan. The tendancy to deal with dark magics - embodied by mastery of Dark Earth and Dark Fire - our Gozoku history in the Scorpion and Crane personalities, our magic in the spells and kihos and our intelligence in the dishonour element. This is not at all an easy deck to play, but it's a lot of fun!
There are several combos in the deck - enough to make your head hurt when you're trying to work out what to do next. The trick is that though none of them are very reliable on their own, over the course of a game you should bring out enough to win. I'll go through some of them now.
Shosuro Maru + Shrine of Stone. Starting with the painfully obvious: the shrine of stone gives you an extra use of Maru on defense. Maru deserves a strategy article all to herself, but note that if you use her on your opponent's turn and then on yours, you can bow a very large number of personalities with relatively few Marus, and then take unopposed provinces.
Duels + Fire Rings. Another painfully obvious point: fire rings (both Light and Dark) really make duels very easy to win. That's not all though - they make people avoid focusing wars with you. This is a very good thing: depleting your hand is a Bad Thing. As with all control decks, drawing cards is vital.
Path of Wisdom, Voice of the Emperor and Kyuden Tonbo. Stick a ring in play, use Introspection to fetch Path of Wisdom, and then at the beginning of each turn discard Path of Wisdom to keep the ring in play. Then bow Kyuden Tonbo to draw a card. Rinse, repeat.
Importune Kami + Dark Ring of Earth. Raise province strength, lower attackers' strength. Dark Earth is excellent meta against the popular weeny-swarm decks, hitting them much harder than decks that rely on a few big people. And of course, the latter sort of deck gets totally destroyed by Maru, and all your personality kill...
Dishonour + Force of Will. The only reason FoWill is in the deck is to punish people who think that refusing Iaijutsu Challenges and Storm Hearts is fun. Shame does this too, but FoWill is stronger against high-honour Samurai and Courtier decks like Crane and Lion. Still, the two copies of Force of Will are the 39th and 40th cards in the deck, and should be early candidates for replacement over time!
Kakita Mai XP and Shiba Mirabu XP. An unlimited source of duels and a guy who wins them. Fire rings help too - remember, the aim is to avoid getting into a focusing war.
Gempukku + Shiba Danjiro. Play Gempukku on Maru, Kaukatsu or Mai and Danjiro can suddenly defend them from nasty Limited actions. MGC lets you bring him back, providing persistant protection for your guys with very strong abilities. It also makes their abilities Innate Abilities, which may be important in the future... (City of Rememberance, anyone?)
Like any control deck, this one will take a while to learn. Don't be surprised if your winning record goes up over time, as you tweak both the deck and your playstyle!
